Tania Luma, JD is an executive coach and a consultant for organizations in leadership, management training, employee engagement, and high-performing employee cultures. She is Harvard-trained in adaptive leadership and public leadership. She has experience in business, education, nonprofit, and government organizations.
She began her career in organization development after graduating from the University of Maryland with a dual degree in journalism and sociology. Upon graduation, she traveled to West Africa, Ghana to establish a shortwave radio station outside the capital Accra. She trained and implemented procedures for staff and students at Valley View University to utilize the station for their campus communication program, as well as the local community. The station continues to be used today by university communication students to develop their media skills and serve as an outlet for local issues.
She continued to create, plan, and implement new organizational systems when she founded and served as the Chair of the Diversity Affairs Committee at her law school. The Committee was the first at the institution solely devoted to the needs of LGBTQ and minority law school students. Through her efforts on the Committee and through collaboration with the administration, The John Marshall Law School established its first Office of Diversity. She helped to create governance principles and was in charge of implementing those concepts.
She also served in Chicago's Child Protection Division as an advocate and attorney for 7 years. She managed legal teams and created Jobs for Youth, an employment program for disadvantaged youth in Cook County foster care. She is also a founding member of an international think tank, GRAHN-Chicago, which concentrates on sustainable development in Haiti. The organization has established over 20 local chapters throughout the United States.
Currently, she is the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UIC John Marshall Law and often teaches courses at the law school.
